Celebrate National Pet Week® in May

Pets warm hearts and bring laughter, companionship and joy into the lives to their owners.  The Arizona Veterinary Medical Association (AzVMA) encourages pet owners to show extra appreciation for their companion animals during National Pet Week®, May 6 - 12.  Take time during this week to thank your pets by considering their health and happiness.

The observance, created by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and its Auxiliary, is dedicated to celebrating the pets in our lives and promoting responsible pet ownership. It’s fascinating to see how pets have become an integral part of our daily lives. Through advances in nutrition, veterinary care, training and so forth, we have improved the quality and longevity of our furry family members. With the advent of social media, the ability to broaden awareness globally to the importance of animal companionship and care has had a profound impact. However, there is still much work to do. Continually spreading the word that our pets are sentient beings, will enhance change. The American Animal Hospital Association supports the concept of animals as sentient beings. Don’t hesitate to bring your pet a little treat this week or go on that extra walk to show your appreciation for the unconditional companionship they provide,” says Dr. Adriana Stinnett, DVM, of Teeth Cleaning 4 Pets, Cave Creek.

May is a great month to discuss preventative care with your veterinarian, such as parasite control and vaccinations.  As the weather heats up, ensure that pets are kept at safe temperatures and have plenty of water available.  Pets should never be left unattended in cars.  If you have pets with risk factors, such as obesity, heart issues, respiratory disease, or old age, use extra caution when exercising them or leaving them outdoors in warm weather.

Discuss your pet’s individual socialization and emotional needs with your veterinarian as well to help your pet be happy and well-adjusted to its environment.
