Observe Check the Chip Day in August

Phoenix, AZ – July 28, 2015  Microchips are a vital link to recovering a pet in case of loss.  The Arizona Veterinary Medical Association (AzVMA) encourages pet owners to observe National Check the Chip Day on August 15.  The observance was created by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA).

Pet owners need to be aware of both microchipping and keeping their registration information updated.  Updating contact information requires knowing the manufacturer and microchip number.

“Microchips save lives and reunite pets with owners on a daily basis,” states Dr. Michelle Larsen of the Emergency Animal Clinic.  “Recently a good Samaritan brought in a ‘stray’ cat that had jumped out of a car window during a long-distance move. The cat was found at a neighborhood grocery store, and brought into the Emergency Animal Clinic. Because the cat had a microchip and the contact information was up to date, the family could be contacted and reunited with their cat.  AAHA’s Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool, available online, is helpful to identify a microchip’s manufacturer and registration number.  Your veterinarian is another great resource for information on microchips.”

Call the AzVMA at 602-242-7936 for more information.  The Arizona Veterinary Medical Association is a membership organization representing over 2,000 veterinary professionals in the state of Arizona.
